5 Considerations for Choosing the Right Security System
for New Homeowners

Choosing the Right Security System for New Homwoners-lifetronicMore people are moving out of New York to Connecticut than ever before. In fact, data from the Postal Service shows that 5,082 New Yorkers moved to Connecticut in March 2020, compared to 1,361 in March 2019. This trend has continued into the rest of the year, with 4,017 new Connecticut residents in April, 3,777 in May, and 3,430 in June.

If you’re one of the many new homeowners moving to Connecticut from The City, you may have a long list of tasks needed to get your new home “move-in ready”; with one of those tasks being to install a security system.

You’ll be happy to learn, that this is one job that a professional can take off your plate. The first step in choosing the right security system for new homeowners is deciding on these five points of consideration.

Consideration #1: Do you need a third-party monitoring system?

A third-party monitoring system is often a desirable feature when it comes to security and surveillance systems for your home. Consider this system your eyes and ears when you’re away from home. With a 24/7 monitoring system, if a security issue is discovered, such as a burglary, of if a fire or carbon monoxide detection occurs, authorities are automatically alerted.

Having a professional monitoring system for your home is highly recommended, as they are always prepared to call the authorities no matter the time of day and/or your whereabouts when away from home.

Of course, there are other security and surveillance options that have become quite popular as of late, such as the Ring security system. It’s important to consider all of the features that this DIY security system comes with. Ring does have a third-party monitoring system you can upgrade to for an additional monthly cost, but it does not come standard.

Consideration #2: Will your new security system integrate with the rest of your smart home?

With a state-of-the-art security system, you can forget about using keys to access your home. Instead, touch screen or push-button locks are installed so you can control them from any internet-enabled device, including your smartphone. This is a great feature if you have, for example, a housekeeper that visits once a week. With an integrated lock system, your housekeeper can have their own code to enter your home that only works once, on that day, and for a specific period of time.

Your security system can integrate into many facets of your smart home, even smart lighting. In the unfortunate event that a fire or burglar alarm goes off in the middle of the night, a warning siren will play over your intercom system, waking all of your family members. In addition, indoor lights will automatically turn on, lighting your way to safety. You can also integrate your security system with your climate control system so it can turn off and stop smoke from circulating throughout your home.

Consideration #3: What level of customization are you going to receive?

Professional security systems can be customized to fit your exact needs and are seamless to your home. A security system pro will consult with you to evaluate your specific needs by determining the access points to your home, desired level of security and budget. After the initial consultation, they will create a custom solution that meets your security requirements.

Another benefit of hiring a professional versus undertaking the DIY-approach is for aesthetic purposes. A professional can conceal all of your security cameras (or not, depending on what they are used for) and create a system that is seamless to the rest of your home and matches its interior and/or exterior.

Consideration #4: Are you interested in outdoor lighting safety capabilities?

When partnering with a professional, they will evaluate how to expertly incorporate outdoor lighting into your home’s security plan. For example, your home’s outdoor lighting can be motion-activated, warding off possible trespassers during the night.

Outdoor lighting can also provide safety to your family. Path lighting can be installed to ensure sure footing, decreasing the risk of accidents and falls. Like your security system, this lighting is also fully customizable. You might want to put your lights on a timer so they go from bright to soft as the night progresses.

Consideration #5: Are you considering a professional installation or taking a DIY-approach?

For homeowners that do not consider themselves the handy type or simply do not have the time and effort to dedicate to a project like this, this may be an important question to consider. Unlike with a DIY, out of the box approach, a trained technician will design a security plan and ensure it is properly installed.
